Matubes: The Return of Black Metal

December 12, 2015

The Return of Black Metal are the very first three songs written and recorded by Bulgarian bulldozers Matubes. The Return of Black Metal is only an eleven minute venture into the darkest corridors and reaches of the earth. However, within those eleven minutes you get something that is incredibly dark and potent. Matubes play in the collapsed vein of traditional black metal, and a lot of traditional black metal can be monotonous and a lot of it is. Their approach may be traditional and the overall sound may be traditional as well, but Matubes brings black metal that is more focused and well rounded.

The Return of Black Metal isn’t all just one pace or one tempo, and each of the three songs don’t sound entirely the same either. Those reasons among others is why Matubes sounds more mature and well rounded than some of their fellow artists.

Black metal doesn’t necessarily have to always be a one tempo rules all experience every single time that you listen to it. Matubes does a great job of mixing tempos creating more than just one atmosphere. Matubes does play at that blistering fast pace and yet they find ways to incorporate slow tempos and mid paced tempos to give the listener more of a variety.

With such a short run time Matubes comes in guns blazing, destroys your life then leaves. The black metal in which Matubes plays is pure in hate, darkness and disgust. The Return of Black Metal is the bane of any decent man’s existence and will be sure to turn him into a church burning, Satan worshiper by the fall of night.

Each riff is soaked in blasphemy and shrouded in a dismal darkness, the drums are calculated and punishing, the bass provides a thick and heavy unshakable tone, while the vocals are screeched and entirely throat slitting. There is no denying that Matubes is out for blood and The Return of Black Metal is their vessel for seeking it out.

The Return of Black Metal is a festering ball of hatred and chaotic energy, and after a couple of listens to this very short release, one can only wonder what a full length would sound like and what that experience would be like. Only time will tell, but for now Matubes have summoned this black metal behemoth and it belongs on the shelf with the rest of your black metal albums.
