Iron Jawed Guru: Mata Hari

March 1, 2016

Rolling down a desert road with a sordid friend, apparitions appear in front of you frequently and you don’t know whether you are really seeing them or the acid you just dropped kicked in.And on this venture, what do you end up playing? Iron Jawed Guru of course. Mata Hari is the perfect sound to cruise down a barren road jamming out to. What you get with Iron Jawed Guru and their release Mata Hari are some rocking tunes that stick with you and get embedded in your brain.

Mata Hari is a dirty and filthy good time that supplies you with enough psychedelic sounds to last you a life time. Why trip when you can feel like you are tripping with Iron Jawed Guru? The trip that you get is exactly as explained above. It’s a gritty feeling and after listening you feel as though you have just come out the other side of something that can only be expressed by this music.

There are no vocals to speak of on Mata Hari so what Iron Jawed Guru does is let your mind wander and create vivid soundscapes without too much context. And really what these two lads do very well is create wonderful, colorful and really vivid soundscapes through every song and that is just half of the fun.

Through Mata Hari, there are no moments of silence. Every minute and every second is taken up by pure stoner rock noise that gets you clear off of your seat and shredding along. Each of the seven songs is filled with grit and grime and a certain amount of fuzz that you just can’t wash off.

Sooner rather than later you begin to foam at the mouth and stare off into space as numerous colors fly out at you-and even out of you at a certain point-and the heavy and hard rocking takes you completely over. After a complete listen you are just a vessel for every color known and unknown to man, psychotic shapes and intriguing beings that may or may not exist.

This release is just a good hard rocking and heavy hitting release that melts your brain and molds it into whatever it deems suitable. You can’t help but to headbang and air guitar to this. It is an infectious piece that allows you to just listen and dive head first into and just get lost in all of the bright and wondrous soundscapes.
