Death metal-much like any other sub-genre of metal-comes in many shapes, styles and forms and sometimes there are other genres added to the deafening mix. With Shed the Skin what you get is pure uncompromising death metal and throughout their debut full length Harrowing Faith, you get to see raw brutality and death metal in its purity. Not necessarily categorizing themselves under the old-school moniker or under any moniker, Shed the Skin is just content playing straight forward brutalizing death metal. The sound of this record not only is a sound that quite frankly doesn’t give a shit about genre titles, but it is also the sound of your impending doom.

Even though Harrowing Faith is generally and ultimately gutting, Shed the Skin are melodic when needed, devastating at other times, and have hints of doom riddled throughout as well. So, not only do they play a putrid style of death metal, but there are other elements at work that make the music that much more unique and intriguing. With everything that Shed the Skin has working for them, you never really know what you will be getting from one track to the next.

Each of the twelve songs are raw, visceral and entirely punishing. Harrowing Faith makes it a point to carve your flesh from your bone and bury you in a shallow grave. This release is a killer and after one listen you feel as though you have been mauled by a bear. Harrowing Faith is a monster of an album and it makes you very aware of the fact that it can kill you at any moment. The unrelenting beating begins as soon as the first note hits your ears and doesn’t stop until the last not has left your speakers.

This record is what boundless aggression and rage put on a disc would sound like and ultimately that sound is the signaling for your end. Shed the Skin have created something where if this record isn’t shedding blood, it is looking for its next victim to terrorize. Harrowing Faith is the pure embodiment of death metal and it doesn’t bend to rules or genre stipulations really as it follows its own blood soaked mantra and beats to its own deadly beat.

Within this blood spurting package you bear witness to eviscerating and doom plagued riffs, gut ripping bass lines, sledgehammer heavy drumming and vocals that are throat tearing and blood soaked themselves. The musicianship on this release is great and insanely deadly, and to make this record even more sinister is the stellar production. The production here is crisp and clean but still has that filthy edge to it. There isn’t a single thing on Harrowing Faith that doesn’t make this a terrifying and ultimately deadly release.

Harrowing Faith is blasphemous and gritty and supplies you with enough death metal to level your entire city. What you see before you and what you end up listening to is something that is utterly sinister and devastating, but most importantly what you end up listening to is death metal in its rawest form that makes you headbang with feverish intensity until your neck snaps. This debut full length is a great album, one that any death-head (or any metal fan for that matter) would like to have in their collection.

Harrowing Faith will be out June 24, 2016 through Hells Headbangers.
