Digipack Cover

Hailing from Italy we find Nekhen whose style of play is primarily doom but he mixes in, elements of black metal and traditional Egyptian instruments to create a sound that is unique and immersive. Entering The Gate Of The Western Horizon is the debut release for this one man band, and this offering features twelve songs that are anvil heavy and they seethe with utter darkness. Unlike traditional doom none of the songs are all that long, but instead of offering you a five track release you get twelve tracks that melt together excellently and create a devastating soundscape.

Almost as soon as you begin the EP you understand what you are getting yourself into. The sound is loud, heavy, mysterious and completely dark and ominous and those themes hold true all throughout the release. Entering The Gate Of The Western Horizon is a solid slab of buzzing noise that collapses on you like tidal waves and sooner or later you get swept away in the dark and abysmal overtones. Entering The Gate Of The Western Horizon grabs you right from the beginning and sinks you slowly into madness as the harsh soundscapes pull and tug at you.

Each of the twelve songs are just as powerful, infectious and memorable as the last. When the first listen is over you don’t mind listening over and over again. There is something about the ritualistic nature of this music that takes over and you seem to melt away right along with each song. Entering The Gate Of The Western Horizon is a smooth listen that takes your mind and makes it wander in the far reaches of the Egyptian desert to get lost forever and ultimately succumb to oblivion.

There isn’t any denying that Entering The Gate Of The Western Horizon is incredibly heavy, but even with all of that heavy comes a melodic nature. While you are ultimately getting your skull caved in by bass heavy and brain rattling riffs, you get swept away in all of the wonderfully evil atmosphere. The atmosphere that Nekhen provides is due to the traditional Egyptian instruments that are used in combination with the soul peeling doom. All of the atmosphere that you are provided with wraps you up and submerges you in pure darkness.

Entering The Gate Of The Western Horizon as a whole is a great listen as it provides you with plenty of variation and plenty of devastating music. One listen turns into many as this release captivates you and sticks with you for quite some time.
