Borrowing from the old-school death metal sound and combining it with punk and thrash is Cruz, and to go along with some great album art is some great metal. Culto Abismal is packed with eight songs of death metal savagery that just does not quit. Each genre that Cruz packs into their sound feeds off of one another to create a sound that is wholly terrorizing and destructive. Culto Abismal is an album that you just can’t stop and as it steamrolls from one song to the next you end up fearing for you life as it may just be taken from you by the end of the listen.
Cruz shoves you straight into the death metal firestorm that is Culto Abismal. There isn’t much to ease you in as there is a bit of an intro to the album, but after that it’s straight neck breaking death metal. Cruz plays fast and plays fast often never stopping to let you catch your breath or give your neck a break from headbanging. Culto Abismal rolls on without regard for human life and sooner or later it comes for yours as well. Once you press play you become trapped in a maelstrom of death metal destruction with no way out, and when the album is over you have to press play again and again.
Culto Abismal is a gritty and grimy listen that makes you feel as though you are covered in filth after listening. The sound to this album is so barbaric, raw and unfiltered that it stops up your speakers. Culto Abismal has a great old-school feeling and sound to it that it could belong in the eighties when death metal was on the rise. However, even with an old sound to the album, Cruz still adds their own modern death metal touch to make the sound very much their own. This isn’t a gimmick or a band that is jumping on an old-school death band wagon, this is just filthy death metal in a pure and raw form.
Each of the eight songs is riddled with serpentine riffs only to be coupled with shredding solos, heavy and earth breaking bass lines, down hill drumming and down right evil vocals. Culto Abismal as a whole is wonderfully evil and sinister as it revels in horror and darkness and it brings you into its own sadistic world right off the bat. There are no frills and there aren’t any filler songs here either as you get just straight up and down no bullshit death metal for eight brutalizing songs.
Culto Abismal is one savage album that just about peels your face back every time that you listen. With great production, musicianship and songwriting, Cruz has created an album for all death metal fans to mark on their calendar to check out. This is one fuck of a solid debut album, and I’ll leave you with that.
Culto Abismal will be out through Sentient Ruin Laboratories on October 7.
