With a sickening sound that just oozes death Lantern brings forth their newest effort II: Morphosis. This release is packed with nine songs of nothing but gnarled and rotted death metal so much so that when you begin listening you can smell the fetid stench of death creep out from your speakers. The only reprieve that you get from an utter brain bashing is when the eight song Morphosis plays before Lantern shoves you right back into the mosh pit of death with their closer Lucid Endlessness. Other than that fifty second break from being hacked apart, what you get are utterly filthy, disgusting and mutilating death metal that is out for nothing but blood.
II: Morphosis is an unrelenting effort by these heathens as they roll out death dealing song after death dealing song. Once the first note hits your shredded ear drums you know that you are in for a sickening ride to death and the only thing that you can do is headbang until your brain bruises. Each song is a flesh tearing and blood boiling ode to death and no matter how battered, bloodied and bruised it is that you get after listening you always feel the need to press play and enter the maelstrom of death yet again.
Lantern does a great job of getting you engaged in the music and getting you headbanging as often as you can and it gets pretty difficult to stop yourself from doing so. Lantern has created an all together savage and barbaric sound that doesn’t soon leave your head yet it tries its best to rip it right off of your shoulders. Each song is just as sadistic, twisted and covered in filth as the last and the more that you listen the more that you end up being covered in fetid remains, rotted cadavers and assorted entrails.
With gnarled and twisted riffs, solid drumming, bone rattling bass lines and blood curdling vocals you end up with a ripping and gut shredding listen. To add to all of that is the raw and unkempt production that just adds to all of the filth and grime and really that’s just what you want to hear from a death metal record. II: Morphosis is just one solid fucking record that you don’t want to stop listening to. This is an intoxicating record and that isn’t just from the fumes of death but from the overall nasty, gritty and cohesive listen that you ultimately get.
Overall, II: Morphosis is a great record that you would be foolish to pass up and is a front runner for one of the best death metal records so far. And now with that, I just have to say to keep your eyes peeled for this release.
II: Morphosis will be out March 17, 2017 through Dark Descent Records.
