Different, unique, interesting, intriguing are all very good descriptors that can describe Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L and their new release Matilda. While at face value these songs seem relatively harmless, lurking on the inside is something more sinister. While that may be, Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L provide you with an entirely different kind of listen. This record draws you in and keeps you listening with all of its shifting parts, melody and the stories that they are telling you. When I began listening never did I expect the sound that did to come out of my speakers and grace me with such a unique and intriguing sound.

There’s something about Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L and Matilda that is magical. This record has an innate ability to suck you into it and keep you around and keep you interested. Matilda is a record that fascinates you right from the beginning and keeps you fascinated all the way through and on to many more listens. You can’t just play this one time and not only does it deserve numerous listens, but the more that you listen the more that you can point out that you may not have heard before.

Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L mixes rock and heavy metal with non-traditional metal instruments to create a folk like sound that just goes so well with the stories that they tell. Matilda is a hard record to get out of your head as it is so captivating and interesting and through each song never once will you end up hearing the same thing again. Each song is entirely different than the ones that came before it, and they aren’t just somewhat different, they are entirely different. Matilda provides you many different styles of music and each one is executed very well which ultimately gives you a diverse and great listen.

Even if certain songs aren’t entirely the happiest in the world, each song on this record is so smooth and so enjoyable and they put you in a good mood almost right away. There’s something about this record that’s almost unexplainable. It’s mystical, twisting, wondrous, and much more and with all of those combined you ultimately get a record that is worth listening to numerous times. Once you begin you just don’t want to stop listening and you can’t seem to remove yourself away from your speakers or your headphones.

Matilda is a very unique album and there just really isn’t anything quite like it out there right now. Through ten songs you get taken on many different journeys through the stories that Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L tell and you just end up getting lost in all of it. Matilda works its way into your brain expertly and nests there for some time to come.
