Reaper-X: Rise

Hailing from the UK is Reaper-X and with them comes their debut full length titled Rise. Through this release you come to greet nine total tracks that range from a variety of topics that include war, suicide, going to shows and moshing to more. Rise is a diverse and varied record, one that holds your attention for its entirety as it ushers forth track after track of thrashing intensity. This release delivers and then some and as a debut full length it is quite impressive. Reaper-X showcases their eclectic abilities throughout the entirety of their album making it to be an overall entertaining and memorable offering.

Reaper-X start their record with a great instrumental that ultimately sets the overall tone for the remainder of the record. The near two minute intro is a looming and heavy handed instrumental that brings to light what you are about to hear for the remaining eight offerings. What you can come to expect are heavy powerful riffs that are supplemented by ever pummeling drums and vicious vocals that pour through the wall of thrashing madness. For the majority of the tracks here they are up tempo romps influenced by thrash but with a little bit more of a modern touch to them making them even more memorable.

Each track here has something new to offer and bring forth and flesh out. Not a single track sounds like another as Reaper-X does a great job mixing things up to provide you with plenty of variety and diversity throughout. Each cut here is a well constructed and well performed metallic assault that gets your fist pumping and your head banging before you know it. Rise is an infectious record, one that is hard to turn away from and one that is easy to come back to when you need a good dosage of thrashing madness. As a whole, this record gets stuck rattling around in your brain for some time to come, never to relinquish its grip on you.

Reaper-X employs a lot of different styles all throughout Rise, giving enough time to each style to let each track breathe and play out as it should. As heavy and brain mashing as the majority of the tracks can be, Reaper-X shows that they can tone things down a bit with the track Adrift. Adrift is a slower thoughtful song that displays the vocalists range as he gifts you with cleans that work so well with the track overall. This track is a softer, not so cranium sanding track that you may not think fits with the rest of the tracks, but does in reality fit well. Adriftis yet another example of Reaper-X’s diversity and ability to play in a style that does not have to be completely balls to the wall heavy.

Overall, Rise is a solid record through and through. With plenty of diversity, different genres thrown in the mix at times, and with a showcasing of a complete tonal shift with Adrift, Reaper-X really has it all through this record. With great musicianship, solid vocals and diversity in subject matter, there is a lot here for just about anyone and everyone to enjoy. This is an entertaining and memorable release as well as just an overall solid debut full length.

Rise will be released March 12 through Sliptrick Records.

This is pure, stripped down, flesh masticating death metal and nothing but. Each offering cuts deep, eviscerating and mutilating to the very end, leaving you as nothing but a mere slab of hacked up remains at the end of it all.

No intro is needed here as Undeath kick your teeth down your throat immediately with their opening track Unadorned Coffin. Hnus Umirajici: S/T

Hailing from the Czech Republic comes Hnus Umirajici with their self titled debut full length. This self titled release contains seven total tracks of black metal with hints of doom and even death metal. Each of the seven tracks here are well constructed, foreboding and damning offerings that drag you further and further away from the light the more each second ticks off the run time. After an interesting, foreboding intro fades in to obscurity, Hnus Umirajici kicks things in to gear with a furious and demonic full opening track.

The full opening track comes straight out of hell’s gate to meet you face to face with ripping riffs that are only to be supplemented by tumultuous drums, dissonant, raspy and hellish vocals. The opening track keeps the furious pace for the most part, only to slow down a bit toward the middle to provide you with a sinister mid tempo romp through the graveyard. The intro is unique and foreboding which atmospherically sets the tone while this opener sets the tone for the metallic onslaught that is about to press onward toward darkness. Each track that follows, follows in similar foot steps where you get a great variety of blasting pure black metal that fades toward more doom-centric sounds that march you toward your demise.

Through and through, this offering has a unique feel and sound to it that is hard to explain. Each cut offers up something new and different that you may not have heard in previous tracks making this entire release varied and diverse throughout. Throughout this record you won’t hear the same thing twice or something recycled as Hnus Umirajici comes at you with different styles and sounds. The mixture of black metal and bits of doom and death metal work well here as they ultimately greet you with an evil, sinister and overall heavy sound that is hard to forget.

With the underlying atmospherics through each track that are a great addition to each one, these seven offerings are well rounded and cohesive efforts that keep you listening. The musicianship is great, the vocals are monstrous when needed and dissonant hellish screams when needed, the atmosphere is ever shifting and wicked, the production is solid and the way that everything comes together within this release is great. Overall, this self titled debut is entertaining and solid through and through, never to greet you with a weak track, always to greet you with a sinister brain bruising affair.

Gjendød: Krigsdøger

Bubbling from where light cannot reach comes Gjendød with their newest offering Krigsdøger. With pure malevolence and blackened vigilance, these heathens offer up nine new tracks that are every bit as twisted, malicious and atmospherically potent as you would hope for. There are no gimmicks here and no frills as what you get is pure black metal through and through and nothing but. Krigsdøger barrels forth through your speakers nearly from the drop of the first note to provide you with ever ripping and blasphemous metal for nine straight soul cleaving offerings.

Without so much as a pause, one malicious act follows another, and then another as each one strikes out like a coiled snake ready to strike at your throat. Each of the nine offerings here are as damning as the one that came before, ever trapping you in an eternal storm of brimstone and hellfire. For the majority of the record, each cut is played at an up tempo yet precise pace that is only interjected by mid tempo paces that offer more atmosphere and variety throughout. Each of the nine tracks present here are well constructed blackened offerings that drag you in, never to let you leave until you have finally been buried among the rest of the damned.

Among the venomous riffs, blasting drumming and dissonant throat ripping howls from hell is an ever present and malicious atmosphere that makes itself known from the very beginning. The atmosphere seeps through each track like a foreboding dismal fog that you cannot escape from. As mentioned, the atmosphere can really be felt once Gjendød slows things down a bit such as in the track Å puste liv i råttent kjøtt. Not only do you get hit with a purely furious metallic onslaught, but you become ensnared in their devilish and wicked atmosphere as well.

From beginning to end, Krigsdøger is a great record. It is constructed well and executed perfectly to provide you with an overall well rounded and very solid record. Not a single track is out of place and not a single track feels weak as each of the nine are as solid and blasphemous as the ones that came before it. Little touches here and there especially with the acoustic guitar are nice flairs that add even more characteristic to each track making each one memorable. Overall, this is a solid record through and through, one that you wouldn’t want to sleep on.

Krigsdøger will be released through Hellthrasher Productions March 9.
