Breaking December: Into The Light

Hailing from Germany comes melodic death metal outfit Breaking December. While taking influences from the metalcore genre as well, Breaking December make their sound their own. Into The Light is the title of their upcoming EP, in which you will find three melodic, well constructed and performed tracks one right after the next. Breaking December has constructed a sound that is entirely memorable and head bang worthy as they treat you to great cleans, memorable choruses and more to provide you with a sound that sticks with you.

Through each track, Breaking December does a good job of incorporating their metalcore influences in to the overall death metal fold. Aggressive, yet melodic seems to be what they are aiming for and they certainly nail that sound right on the head. From the very beginning, as soon as you press play you realize that each of the three tracks will be stuck in your mind for some time. Each track is a well constructed offering that provides you with that aforementioned balance of aggression and melody that gets right underneath your skin.

Breaking December offers up solid musicianship, a clean production and vocals that switch between bloodied growls, mid screams and very good clean sung vocals that will have you belting the lyrics right out with the lead vocalist. Each track is a well put together offering that will manifest itself in your mind for some time to come. Try as you might, you will not be able to shake these tracks.

Heavy, yet melodic and highly memorable, Breaking December have found a good formula for their overall sound. The mixture of death metal and metalcore here is a good one as you are treated to three well constructed offerings that are easy to come back to as you will. Through Into The Light you are provided with a pretty straight forward sound, but one that is well constructed, entertaining and memorable all the same. Overall, this is a solid release.

LSCOD: Cherophobia

Emerging from the abyssal depths of despair comes one man depressive black metal act LSCOD. Cherophobia is the title of their debut EP, in which it features five total offerings of pure depressive blackened metal. Each track is a dissonant work of art that provides you with a light stealing abyssal atmosphere that hangs over you like a cloud. Once you press play you have no choice but to succumb to the bitter and cold darkness that LSCOD unfolds before you. You are given no reprieve from this melancholic offering as each track suffocates you under its oppressive and damning atmosphere.

LSCOD starts Cherophobia off with an intro appropriately titled Intro (Torture). This near two minute intro provides you a peek in to what you are about to hear. Intro (Torture) offers up a melancholic piano tone that is coupled with horrifying spectral whispers, until it fades in to a dark realm only for the first full track to appear. The track that immediately follows is titled ROOM. This offering starts slowly and hauntingly providing you with the aforementioned chilling and cold atmosphere until it picks the pace up to greet you with rapid fire drumming and scythe like riffs. Along with the dissonant guitar work and ever pounding drumming are pained cries that cut through the sonic blasphemy to provide you with an overall unsettling sound. Throughout this track, LSCOD does a great job of mixing tempos to offer up a varied and diverse track that switches between a glacial slow melancholic sound and a skin blistering tempo. As this seven and half minute track unfolds, you get dragged further and further in to the bleak and ever forlorn soundscapes that materialize before you.

The third full original track titled Sink In Dementia is a much slower track that provides you with a truly chilling atmosphere all throughout. The tempo shift from ROOM isn’t all so drastic, but it is palpable as you feel as though your soul is being dragged in to a never ending darkness once Sink In Dementia begins. This track is incredibly steeped in painful tones and darkness as pained cries can be heard cutting through the slow dirge of depression and anguish. The fifth, final and title track is an even more drastic tempo and tone shift as it is a tried and true blackened assault once it appears. The title offering treats you to a blitzkrieg of rapid fire drumming, slicing riffs and gritty howled vocals over the sonic wall of blackened noise. Cherophobia is a great track to close the release out with as it offers up near five minutes of a true blackened assault that carries depressive and melancholic tones of its own.

Cherophobia is a greatly varied offering as it provides you with plenty of tempo shifts from track to track, keeping you on your toes for the entirety of its run time. Through and through this is a solid release, one that is dark, haunting, depressive, melancholic and even at times completely ripping. This is a release that will offer fans of depressive black metal plenty of diversity and variety, one that will please their gnarled ear drums.
