In a caustic mashing of grindcore and black metal, Sophist comes storming through the gates of the netherworld to grace us with a truly skin ripping and flesh tearing sound. Their upcoming offering Betrothal To The Stone features six unbridled and unhinged offerings of grinding blackened malevolence that is sure to twist your neck leaving your head screwed on backward. Nearly from the onset you come face to face with pure brute force savagery that is never to relent until the last gnarled note pierces through your ear drums. Ever ripping, buzzing and maiming, Sophist offer up a terrorizing wall of noise one track after the next that devastates and scorches earth.
Once you press play, Sophist leads you in to their opening (and title) track with an unsettling clip before blasting your brains out with tumultuous blast beats and buzzsaw riffs. Completing the true terrorizing sound are hellish vocals that are as gritty and bloodied as you could imagine, cropping up from a true sonic wall of terror and malice. This ripping offering sets you up for what you are about to witness for the remainder of the five tracks that follow. Each track that is to come after follows closely in the footsteps of the opening track as each one of the them is just as explosive and flesh peeling.
You are given no reprieve, and there is no light at the end of this as you are left mangled and bloodied once all is said and done. Each track is a blitzkrieg of damaging and terrorizing noise that pierces through you nearly immediately after it crops up. From beginning to end you come under siege, suffocating underneath the wall of grinding face melting noise never for you to crawl out from underneath it. Betrothal To The Stone is truly a maelstrom of scalding metal that picks you up only to spit you out the other end definitely looking worse for wear.
Betrothal To The Stone is an unholy, sinister, and malevolent creation, one that has you ripped to shreds before all has concluded. This cacophony of evil is just that, as this entire EP is riddled with six malevolent hymns that are as chaotic and piercing as you would imagine. In skull sanding and neck twisting speed, the occult and an overall wicked drive to produce an overall devilish sound, Sophist has created an overall great release here with Betrothal To The Stone.
Betrothal To The Stone: Conception of Mephisto is to be released August 16.
