What do you get when you combine two completely legendary death metal bands within one singular split? You get nothing but pure, raw, filthy and dehumanizing death metal and nothing but. Over the years since their respective inceptions, Coffins and Depression have been tearing you and this planet apart ever since they’ve played their first notes. Both bands have an incredibly grizzly, gnarled and bloodied sound that leave you as nothing more than food for the subterranean creatures that dwell beneath the soil. Throughout this split you become subject to nine total tracks of pure death metal putridity. There are no frills here, only bloodied, vein draining death.
The first band to crawl from the crypt and take a deadly stab at you is none other than Japan’s own Coffins. Coffins features only three tracks within this nine track offering, but even so they come at you in full force hacking your skull open before you know it. Each of the three offerings that Coffins provides are as deadly, gnarled and bone gnashing as you would come to expect from these grave defilers. Within these tracks, Coffins foregoes a large portion of their doom aesthetic and focuses in large part on their tried and true death metal onslaught. Each track drips with blood and ferocity as you come under siege from buzzing, flesh slicing riffs, bass work that ejects your spinal fluid from your spine, drum work that cracks your bones and vocals that are entirely otherworldly. Coffins displays why they have had the longevity that they have by providing you with nothing but top notch death metal and nothing but. Each offering cuts deeply and maims beyond recognition as each of the three are complete juggernauts of death from a complete juggernaut of a death metal band in Coffins.
Once Coffins’ section concludes, Depression picks right up to provide you with their own brand of flesh splicing, soul harvesting death metal. The final six tracks of this split belong to Germany’s Depression, and much like Coffins these heathens don’t like frills or gimmicks either. What you get in this second half is a cleaner production than that of Coffins, but a just as gnarled, gross and putrid sound. Honing their deadly craft since 1989, Depression has kept their tried and true traditional death metal sound and within this split they show off just why they are also one of the juggernauts of death metal. Through and through you become submerged in utter disgusting, skin peeling death metal. From the drop of the first note you understand that the grave you are digging isn’t for anyone but yourself. If the Coffins side of the split didn’t maim you enough, this side definitely will as Depression comes for your neck until your head pathetically rolls on the ground. Sinister, barbaric, bloodied and brutal, Depression packs a lot in their six putrid offerings as you get trapped in a maelstrom of stagnant, rotting death. Depression features nothing but pure, festering, blood boiling rotting death that simply does not relent until the final gnarled note flies through your speakers and pierces your frontal lobe.
With both Coffins and Depression being on this split, you just simply cannot go wrong here. These two giants of death metal bring forth some of the most sickening and brutal death metal that you will be able to hear. Through nine tracks you just get treated beyond belief to a smorgasbord of death metal that you do not want to miss.
This split will be unleashed December 30th through Hells Headbangers.
