Appearing from the barren abyss in the year 2018, death metal legion Exsul began brewing something that would finally see the light of day in November of this year. That thing just so happens to be their debut self titled EP that comes complete with four tracks and a lengthy run time of twenty-three total minutes. Through those twenty-three minutes, Exsul instills fear, horror and the unmistakable presence of death within you. Grimy, and unfiltered, this death horde unleashes something entirely unique and damning. Exsul’s sound cannot be mistaken, and their onslaught of pure death cannot be quelled until the toll of the bell signals your ultimate demise.
With their mixture of flesh carving death metal and spine splintering doom, Exsul creates a sound here that is incredibly heavy. In no time you become crushed under the sheer astronomical weight of the sound that Exsul provides. With barbaric blood letting riffs, chest cavity shattering drum work and hellish wraith like vocals, Exsul provides you with a truly damming and life extinguishing listen. Through and through you are treated to a pure and deadly sound that fills you with dread and terror the more that you listen. The nightmare persists for four epic tracks and with no light to be seen the only way to escape is to succumb to the death machine that is Exsul.
Not only are you faced with a devastating sound, but throughout you come shrouded in an atmosphere that is just as deadly and poisonous. Through each of the four offerings you come to greet an overall evil and sinister tone that chills you straight to your bone marrow. This lurking, ever present ambiance weighs on you just as heavy as the gutting instrumentation does. It is a perfect compliment to an already soul harvesting sound and it ultimately ushers you further and further to an abyss of never ending darkness and dread.
As deranged and sinister as this release is, it is equally as captivating. This debut EP is an outstanding release through and through as you are gifted with top notch death metal from track on to track four. Each offering is just as potent and strong as the last making this to be an overall cohesive and fully well rounded EP.
Caligari Records will be helping spread the destruction via CD format on January 7th 2021.
